LGBTQ+ Inclusion in the National Assessment of Educational Progress
GLSEN continues to urge the U.S. Department of Education to include LGBTQ+ demographic questions in the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) surveys of students and teachers (see 88 Federal Register §24, 87 Federal Register §219, and 87 Federal Register §41). The NAEP provides critical insight into student achievement and learning experiences across academic subjects that inform education policy and practice and, importantly, includes questions related to race, ethnicity, and (for students only) socioeconomic status. To better determine how well our K-12 schools are serving the needs of all students, NAEP surveys should use LGBTQ+ inclusive survey measures.
